Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Settle Divorce After Eight-Year Legal Battle

After over eight years of legal proceedings, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have reached a settlement in their divorce. According to Jolie’s lawyer, James Simon, both parties signed the agreement on December 30.

“More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt,” Simon shared. “She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time, she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family. This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over.”

Hollywood stars Pitt and Jolie became one of the most high-profile couples in the world when they got together after meeting on the set of "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," in which they co-starred.

Jolie filed for divorce in 2016 after a decade-long relationship with Pitt, which included a 2014 marriage and six children together. The prolonged legal battle involved multiple factors, including custody disputes, a 2016 private plane incident, and disagreements over the sale of their French winery, Château Miraval.

Details surrounding the circumstances of the 2016 plane incident emerged in August 2022, when an  FBI report released revealed that Jolie accused her husband of physical and verbal abuse on a 2016  flight from France to Los Angeles, during which he allegedly choked one of their children. Pitt was never arrested or charged, and Jolie filed for divorce days later, citing irreconcilable differences. She sought sole physical custody of their children while Pitt retained joint legal custody.

The couple's marriage was officially dissolved in 2019, though legal disputes continued. The French winery they once co-owned has since become the center of an ongoing legal feud, stemming from Jolie’s 2021 sale of her stake that Pitt has since claimed was unlawful. That case remains ongoing.

Jolie reflected in 2020 on her decision to separate, saying it was for the “wellbeing” of her family: “They are six very brave, very strong young people.”

Netflix Becomes Exclusive U.S. Broadcaster for FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 and 2031

FIFA and Netflix have announced a groundbreaking deal that will bring the next two FIFA Women’s World Cups exclusively to Netflix in the United States. The tournaments, scheduled for 2027 in Brazil and 2031 (host yet to be announced), mark the streaming giant’s entry into major international football broadcasting.

Netflix coverage of the Women’s World Cup will include commentary and entertainment from studio shows and top-tier talent, as well as exclusive documentary spotlighting the top players, their journeys, and the explosion of the sport around the globe.

“This is a landmark moment for sports media rights,” stated FIFA President Gianni Infantino. He emphasized the significance of this collaboration, adding, “This agreement sends a strong message about the real value of the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the global women’s game. FIFA and Netflix partnering together makes this a truly historic day for broadcasting and for women’s football.”

Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria echoed the excitement, noting, “Bringing this iconic tournament to Netflix isn’t just about streaming matches, it’s also about celebrating the players, the culture, and the passion driving the global rise of women’s sport.”

Earlier in 2023, the platform secured a three-year deal to broadcast the NFL’s Christmas Day games, and it has since expanded into boxing and WWE programming.

In November, Netflix aired a high-profile boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul, which garnered 60 million streams worldwide. Starting in 2025, Netflix will also be the exclusive home of WWE’s Monday Night Raw in a $5 billion, 10-year agreement.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup, described by both parties as “the single biggest women’s sporting event on the planet,” has seen surging viewership. In 2023, Spain’s victory over England drew over two million viewers on FOX and Telemundo, while the U.S. women’s national team’s matches averaged nearly 3.8 million viewers.

Netflix’s move reinforces the rising prominence of women’s sports and signals a new era in sports broadcasting.

UK Inflation Rises Ahead of Bank of England's Critical Decision

Office for National Statistics (ONS) has reported that UK inflation rose to 2.6% in November, up from 2.3% in October. This increase matches market expectations and comes as the Bank of England prepares to make a crucial decision on interest rates later this week.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile items such as food and energy, also saw an uptick, rising to 3.5% from 3.3% in October. This was slightly below the anticipated figure of 3.6%. Meanwhile, services inflation, a key indicator closely watched by the Bank of England for domestic price pressures, remained steady at 5%, slightly below market expectations of 5.1%.

Earlier this year, falling inflation allowed the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to lower interest rates in August and November. However, the headline rate has been pushed higher recently by rising energy costs and persistent services inflation. Despite this recent uptick, it is widely expected that the Bank of England will keep interest rates on hold at its upcoming meeting. Markets remain divided on the likelihood of a rate cut in February.

Ghana's Ex-President Mahama Wins 2024 Elections

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has officially declared John Mahama, candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as the winner of the 2024 Presidential Election, following the late announcement on the evening of December 9, 2024.

Jean Mensa, the commission's chairperson and the returning officer for the national presidential election, made the announcement. As she announced the findings, she stated, "As a commission, we have fulfilled our vowed aspiration to have transparency at the heart of our operations."

Mahama, the former president of Ghana from 2012 to 2016, received 56.55% of the vote, more than his primary opponent, Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, who received 41.61% of the votes.

After carefully examining the votes cast nationwide, the election results were verified. According to the EC chair, the commission was unable to complete the collation process in 9 constituencies that were not included in the declared results.

Bawumia quickly admitted loss when the election ended on December 7, 2024, despite his earlier optimism about his chances. In a sincere address, he made the concession, recognizing the people's will and urged for a peaceful and orderly handover of power. In the speech, he congratulated Mahama and urged Ghanaians to support the incoming government for the country's prosperity. He also called for national unity.

Mahama's party, The National Democratic Congress (NDC), also achieved a historic triumph with a majority in the Parliament. The NDC has already secured over 160 seats, including important areas that have historically been occupied by the ruling NPP. Mahama's mandate is strengthened by this achievement as he gets ready to take office again.

In an address delivered after the declaration of his victory on Monday, December 9, the President- elect reaffirmed his commitment to implement stringent measures aimed at revitalizing the ailing nation.

" We would be initiating important governance reforms, and sometimes initiate severe measures in the next four years to reset our nation and bring it back on track as the Black star of Africa."

Trump’s Immigration Plans: Deportations, Dreamers, and the End of Birthright Citizenship

In a recent interview with Meet the Press, President-elect Donald Trump laid out his immigration plan, indicating significant shifts in U.S. policy. Among his proposals are mass deportations, ending birthright citizenship, and a willingness to work with Democrats on protections for Dreamers under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Trump reiterated his pledge made during the campaign to deport all illegal immigrants, starting with those who have committed crimes. Trump declared, "We have to get the criminals out of our country," and he added that deportations will also apply to "others" who are not criminals. Despite not defining "others," he underlined how important it is to enforce immigration laws: “It’s a very tough thing to do… but you have to have rules, regulations, laws. They came in illegally.”

"I don't want to be breaking up families," Trump said in reference to mixed-immigration families. So the only way you don’t break up the family is you keep them together, and you have to send them all back.” His comments align with those of his proposed border czar, Tom Homan, who advocates deporting families together.

Additionally, Trump intends to revoke birthright citizenship, which is guaranteed by the 14th Amendment to all people born in the United States. Trump said, "We have to end it," calling it "ridiculous." Although more than thirty countries, including Canada and Brazil, have similar citizenship privileges, he asserted that the program is exclusive to the United States.

Considering birthright citizenship is firmly established in constitutional law, any attempt to eliminate it by executive action would be immediately challenged in court.

Regarding Dreamers—undocumented immigrants brought to the country as youngsters and protected under DACA—Trump adopted a more accommodative tone while retaining a harsh position on the majority of immigration-related issues. “We have to do something about the Dreamers,” Trump said, highlighting their contributions to society. “Some of them are no longer young people… they’ve become successful. They have great jobs, and in some cases, they have small or large businesses.”

Trump acknowledged the special circumstances of Dreamers and stated his willingness to work with Democrats on a legislative proposal for them. He remarked, “These are people that have been brought here at a very young age… they don’t even speak the language of their country.”

Trump's immigration policies are expected to spark heated discussions as he gets ready to enter office. Advocates as well as critics are preparing for legal and political battles, particularly in relation to constitutional issues pertaining to DACA protections and birthright citizenship. Trump's plan indicates a controversial direction for U.S. immigration policy going forward, with a combination of strong policies and some compromises.
