John Dramani Mahama Leads in Ghana's Presidential Elections as Vice President Bawumia Concedes Defeat

Early results show that former president John Dramani Mahama has a significant lead over Vice President Mahamadu Bawumia in Ghana's presidential elections, which ended on December 7, 2024. This victory marks a return to power for Mahama, who previously served as president from 2012 to 2017.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer and leader Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia conceded defeat to his NDC counterpart 24 hours after polls closed and expressed his commitment to a peaceful transition of power.

In an address to the state on Sunday, December 8, Bawumia noted that he had called former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress John Dramani Mahama and congratulated him. “I have spoken to President-elect John Dramani Mahama to congratulate him on his victory. The people of Ghana have spoken, and we must respect their decision,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

He reiterated his commitment to Ghana's democratic values and thanked the people of Ghana for the chance to serve. The concession marks the end of a highly competitive election and sets the stage for the incoming administration to begin its work.

Although the Electoral Commission (EC) is anticipated to formally certify the final results in the next few hours, preliminary findings indicate that Dr. Bawumia appears to be trailing behind Mahama and that some important NPP members of parliament have lost their seats.
