Syria in Turmoil: Assad's Unexpected Departure and the Rise of Terrorism

Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has recently broken his silence, making his first public statement since being ousted from power. In a statement shared on December 16 on the former presidency’s Telegram channel, Assad declared that Syria has now fallen "into the hands of terrorism." This dramatic revelation provides a rare glimpse into the chaotic and urgent circumstances surrounding his departure from Syria.

Assad emphasized that his departure was neither premeditated nor a result of the final battle hours. Instead, it was prompted by an immediate request from Moscow to evacuate to Russia due to escalating threats. He stated, "My departure from Syria was neither planned nor did it occur during the final hours of the battles. Moscow requested... an immediate evacuation to Russia on the evening of Sunday, December 8," detailing that he had relocated to Latakia earlier that day amid growing dangers.

Reflecting on the current state of Syria, Assad expressed deep concern, saying, "When the state falls into the hands of terrorism and the ability to make a meaningful contribution is lost, any position becomes void of purpose." This poignant statement marks Assad's first acknowledgment of the collapse of his presidency and highlights the critical role Moscow played in his evacuation during his tenure's final stages.

This development raises significant questions about Syria's future and the ongoing influence of external regional powers. As Assad steps away from the limelight, the international community must grapple with the implications of his departure and the rise of terrorism in Syria.
