Ghana Fights to Save the Atewa Forest

#SAVE THE ATEWA FOREST RESERVE
The Atewa Forest Reserve is an area recognized as having high priority ecosystems, having a high species diversity, both flora and fauna(at least 1100 plant species, highest butterfly species in West Africa- over 700 species, amphibians and also birds)a rich environment for species habitation. The forest area has proven to support life which would rather die out and go extinct in some other forest areas. The Atewa Forest has high levels of endemism and of great hydrological importance.
The Forest over the period has been threatened by human activities such as mining , illegal logging, hunting and encroachment which reduces the wholesomeness of the range. The hills hold deposits of bauxite and in recent years international companies have explored the possibility of open cast mining inside the reserve. The government of Ghana is currently investing in the bauxite industry and Atewa has been named a key source of ore.

Mining in this reserve shall be a major problem for the nation as their activities will disturb the natural environment hence affecting other animal life even to extinction. Mining in this region will also tend to affect water resources on which many Ghanaians depend. This act if promoted will affect over 5 million Residents directly and indirectly.
